grad show - make a date!

Here's a date for your diaries!
Urszula Petrykowska, one of our jewelry artists, is having her grad show at Vancouver Community College this Thursday.
The opening reception for the jewelry art and design students is taking place on Thursday, 20th May at the downtown campus. The reception starts at 6pm and the exhibition will be in place for three weeks until June 13th.

City Hall featured artist: Beryl Hickinbottom

This month's artist featured in the Port Moody City Hall display case is weaver and textile artist, Beryl Hickinbottom.



Beryl is a very active local weaver, belonging to two guilds and continuing to learn her craft thru workshops. Her handwoven scarves will amuse the senses thru their texture and adorable mixture of colour. I love her mix of different types of fibre, some of her scarves have a geat sense of playfulness about them. All would enhance an outfit (and make a mum proud to receive one as a gift!)



Of particular delight to me personally is the addition of two beautiful fibre jewelry pendants in her display.
Well worth a trip to the display cases!

May's Featured Artist: Amanda Maxwell

(ahem) May's featured artist just happens to be me, your blog editor so I'll keep the text brief and let the photos do the talking.




























I've been a member of the Blackberry Artist's Society for almost a year now and making/selling jewelry for four years. I use wire crochet to make jewelry, weaving beads and pearls into a mesh which encircles your wrist or neck, or dangle from your ear lobes. Wire crochet is a very versatile technique, very delicate yet robust. As well as in jewelry I've also used the mesh I hand crochet in evening purses.





















A lot of my pieces are inspired by my parent's garden, far away in bonnie Scotland, or by the beach in the wee Scottish village I grew up in.
Yes, there's an element of homesickness abounding in my work!

While we're waiting for some photographs of the new featured artist, City Hall and library displays how about feasting your eyes on this astounding art glass roundel from artist Margret Billings?

Each piece of glass is meticulously cut by hand before soldering delicately into place.
