Tales from Summer Travels

Gentle reader, as you know by now, the Blackberry Artists are having a group exhibition in the arts centre. Our theme is Summer Travels and 20 of the artists have submitted works for the show.

The piece shown above is by ceramic artist Myrta Hayes and, sadly, is her second submission for the exhibition. The first 'bust' suffered a cruel blow when it shattered in the kiln. This version, sans cracked nipples, graces the display case in the Plum Gallery.

I'll let the artist say a few more words (but please - do go visit!)

"Remember, this piece of art is meant to be humorous, it is not meant to be realistic and some of its parts are greatly exaggerated for emphasis. It is functional as it can be used as a vase; I put glaze on the inside. The tag "Translink Bus Fare, WreckBeach" is made of clay, too, using lithography for text and the tattoo below the breast and on the back are also made using lithography."

OK so bear with me gentle reader. These blog posts are written in advance and scheduled through the month. At the time of writing this the weather is Anything But Summery ...... but I'm hopeful (and recklessly optimistic).

July's featured artist: Sarah Ronald

This month's featured artist is photographer Sarah Ronald.

I should really correct myself here - this month's featured artist is Sarah Ronald whose amazingly vivid photography is on display in the gift shop during July. Her work ranges from incredible nature-inspired macro images of insects on flowers through quirky observations of architectural paraphernalia to vivid colour captures in the world around us. I find that each image is a totally new take on what we see around us in daily life.

Totally refreshing!

Sarah is much more than just a photographer; she also teaches youth art classes and runs her own creative business offering custom printing services. Her images can be printed traditionally or on to a range of alternative surfaces such as tiles, glass and ceramic (hint: you will have to visit the gift shop to learn how she does this!)
