For the Hostess with the Mostest

Hand-carved cottonwood bark, by George Blackstock

It's summer! Like many of us, we're prepping for a holiday and will soon be winging our way toward family and friends. Best to not wait till the 11th hour to remember the hostess gift! For one thing, it's fun to look for something just right for a particular person. It's also a symbolic gift, meant to express gratitude to the hostess, whether they entertain us in grand or low-key style. And who doesn't love receiving a gift chosen expressly for them? Right now, the Blackberry Gift Shop is full of tempting pieces that are sure to please. Pop on down to choose something before you go. Several days ago, I chose a beautiful hand-painted scarf for my mother-in-law. Every once in a while, I drift over and look at because it’s so lovely. Swelegant, as Cole Porter would say. You’ll be just as lucky. The shop is open seven days a week from noon to 4:00 p.m., and a Blackberry artisan will be on hand to assist you. The clock is ticking…hurry down… And have a wonderful trip!

June's Featured Artist at City Hall: Jan Pavlic Falkenberg

This month the display case at City Hall is filled with ceramic artwork by Jan Pavlic Falkenberg. This is a glorious opportunity to take a peek at her new direction - ornamental ceramic bells for the garden. Although you can't hear them chime, you can feast your eyes on a couple of the smaller bells in the display case.
Jan also has some of her jewelry pieces on display. These are bold, statement pieces - unique items that will make you stand out stylishly, but still easy to accessorise with.
Your house isn't forgotten either - check out the beautiful shell screenprint serving tray and coasters. Wouldn't they look great for summer living?

As usual, all items are for sale through the gift shop. Please phone 604.931.2008 ext.102 to arrnage your purchase.

June's Featured Artist: Del Holbrook

Headin' Home, Intarsia, by Del Holbrook
"Headin' Home," Intarsia, by Del Holbrook

This show features new pieces inspired by famous Intarsia artists.  The wood for these pieces is mostly Western Red Cedar augmented by some special exotic woods from my collection of found and unique woods given to me by my friends.

As I shape and carve the woods, the beautiful grain patterns that emerge from within the piece add immensely to the character and definition of the subject.  This hidden beauty is what keeps me interested enough to finish each piece.  The discovery after each knife cut or sanding session is invigorating and builds my desire to create further Intarsia pieces.

Please enjoy the show.

(Come on down to the Blackberry Gift Shop to see Del's exhibition this month. We are located in the Port Moody Arts Centre and are open seven days a week, from 12-4 p.m.)
